Ketu South residents to demonstrate against ECG on 1st September

Residents of Ketu South in Ghana's Volta Region have announced plans for a demonstration on September 1, 2026, to protest persistent over-billing, high estimated electricity bills, and delays in repairing faulty meters. The peaceful protest, organized under the theme "Enough Is Enough! Stop the Over-Billing Now!", will call for urgent action from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to address widespread irregularities in billing practices.

The demonstration's convener, Mr. Edem Mensah Viglo, said the event aims to highlight the difficulties consumers face in obtaining accurate bills and resolving complaints. He explained that the protest is not merely about electricity bills but also about "justice, dignity, accountability, and the protection of consumer rights." Mr. Viglo highlighted that excessive estimated bills, unexplained charges, and the prolonged replacement or repair of defective meters have led to financial strain on households and businesses, contributing to business collapses and a rise in the local unemployment rate.

He cited instances where residents received bills despite having been disconnected for months or had bills running into thousands of Ghana cedis for minimal appliances. The organisers seek greater transparency from ECG and are urging residents to participate peacefully in the demonstration, which will start at Denu Junction and march to the ECG office in Denu.
