Ketu South residents threaten demonstration over alleged ECG overbilling

Residents of the Ketu South Municipality in Ghana are threatening to stage a peaceful demonstration on September 1, 2026, to protest alleged overbilling by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG). According to Edem Mensah Viglo, the group's convener, customers have been enduring large estimated bills without proper meter readings, unexpected overcharges, and slow responses to complaints.

Viglo wants ECG to strictly base bills on accurate meter readings and to compensate those wrongly charged. The protest, themed "Enough Is Enough! Stop the Over-Billing Now!", will start at Denu Junction and proceed to the Ketu South Municipal Assembly and the ECG office in Denu. Viglo asserts that the overbilling has led to business failures and contributed to the rise in the municipality's unemployment rate.

He says authorities were previously informed about the issue but have not taken any significant action. ECG has been notified, and security forces have been informed of the planned demonstration to maintain order. The organisers urge citizens and residents to join the peaceful protest, emphasizing its broader implications for justice, dignity, accountability, and consumer rights.

Recently, the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr John Abdulai Jinapor, announced an independent investigation into alleged overbilling and faulty meters in several Volta Region communities, including Ketu. The investigation will be carried out by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission and the Energy Commission following resident complaints.
