'I Am Definitely Not A Painter. I Am A Mystic Who Happens To Paint!': Dr Udayraj Gadnis At 60

Born in 1963, Dr. Udayraj Gadnis emerged as a prodigious talent in the Indian art scene at a young age. Within three years, he held three solo exhibitions across India and attracted widespread media attention, earning him the title of the "uncrowned prince of Indian contemporary art" by the age of 30. Now in his sixtieth year, the renowned artist and mystic professor resides comfortably at the Taj Santacruz near the airport, dressed in traditional attire and enjoying simple pleasures like French fries and coffee, undisturbed by autograph seekers.

On being recognized as a senior artist and a senior citizen, Dr. Gadnis feels fulfilled and enriched, as he has been painting consistently for 35 years, producing over 3,500 pieces. He perceives his life as a blessing, with his paintings serving as a medium to express his deep-rooted spirituality. He dismisses the notion that many Indian painters are not considered true artists, stating that he is a mystic who happens to paint.

Gadnis's art is deeply rooted in Indian spiritualism, and he sees no conflict between his spiritual beliefs and his artistic expression. He has authored several books on Tantra and actively engages in various activities beyond painting, such as writing, reading, singing, and teaching. In 2021, Gadnis chose to showcase his artwork in London, rather than in India, due to the pressure exerted by the Maharashtra political lobby against his erotic Tantric paintings. These paintings, celebrating the nine mystic saints of Maharashtra, were displayed in Switzerland, finally honoring the legacy of Bara Jyotirlinga, the twelve original Shivalingas present in India.
