How an English breakfast unites this small Costa Calida town every summer

Every summer, the small town of Roda in Costa Calida unites its diverse population through the traditional English breakfast held in the town’s pine grove. On the final Thursday of August, more than 400 locals, visitors, and international residents gathered to enjoy the popular meal. The event, which marked its fourteenth year, has grown from a simple way to welcome the British community to a cherished part of International Day celebrations.

Local representative Eulogio Sánchez emphasized how the sense of integration remains stronger than ever, thanks to the tireless efforts of a team of British and Irish volunteers. The organizers worked from sunrise to serve a hearty fry-up at a modest price of €2.50 per plate, including eggs, bacon, sausages, mushrooms, and baked beans. As the years go by, an increasing number of Spanish residents join the feast each year.

The success of the event was praised by local officials, who commended the festivity committee and foreign volunteers for their hard work. The gathering serves as evidence of the harmony and integration among Roda’s diverse cultures.

The festivities continued into the evening with a lively community dinner, where roughly 1,000 grilled burgers were served alongside live music. The festive atmosphere set the stage for a weekend filled with action, including barbecue and rumba rhythms, children’s activities, a traditional street party, and a late-night migas roasting.

The festivities culminated on Sunday, August 30, with a morning sardine roast and the solemn mass and procession honoring the town's patron saint at 8:30pm. Once again, Roda's pine grove proved that good food and community spirit are the ultimate recipe for a truly united summer celebration.
