Headmaster hailed hero for timely action that saved 1,643 school students from Nepal floods

On 26 August, Nepal experienced devastating flash floods triggered by a glacier collapse, resulting in widespread destruction and loss of life. Ravindra Dadabi, headmaster of a school near the Trashuli river in Battar region of Nuwakot district, played a crucial role in minimizing the death toll. When Dadabi learned about the approaching floods, he immediately rang the school bell, instructed students and staff to seek higher ground, and alerted inbound bus drivers to turn back.

Despite the school building being swept away by the torrential waters, all 1,643 students managed to escape. Dadabi's quick actions prevented a much higher death toll, as he turned away approaching buses and prevented a collapsing bridge from claiming more lives. With 734 deaths and nearly 3,000 missing, Nepal now mourns the tragic consequences of the catastrophic floods.
