Government invests in transmission infrastructure to improve power supply in Volta Region – Jinapor

The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, announced substantial transmission investments aimed at enhancing electricity reliability and meeting rising demand in the Volta Region. These initiatives include the construction of a 45-kilometre 161 kV transmission line connecting Asiekpe to Ho, along with a new 161/34.5 kV Bulk Supply Point (BSP) in Ho.

Jinapor emphasized that these projects will elevate voltage levels, bolster power supply reliability, and augment capacity to accommodate the growing demand along the Asiekpe-Ho-Kadjebi corridor. He addressed this during the launch of the Big Push electrification project under the Rural Electricity Acceleration and Urban Intensification Initiative (REIP) in Ho on August 30, 2026.

Jinapor stated that these transmission investments are part of a comprehensive government strategy to strengthen Ghana's electricity value chain from generation to distribution. He highlighted the importance of system improvements to ensure reliability and sustainability. Additionally, more than 2,500 distribution transformers are being installed nationwide across ECG and NEDCo operational regions.

Beyond these transmission upgrades, the government is actively pursuing a transition to a cleaner and more diversified energy mix, with a focus on promoting renewable energy sources such as solar power. Jinapor explained that increasing the share of renewables in Ghana's generation mix will enhance energy security, mitigate fuel price volatility, and support the nation's shift towards a more sustainable energy future.

The Minister also underscored efforts to improve the financial sustainability of the power sector, strengthen utility operations, and attract private-sector investment. The ultimate goal is to establish a resilient and financially sustainable power sector capable of supporting Ghana's industrial and economic transformation. Jinapor stressed that expanding electricity access is about more than just extending power lines; it is about extending "opportunity, productivity, and prosperity" to communities across the country.
