Google changes Lake Ontario to Lake America in Search, Google Maps

Google has recently renamed Lake Ontario to Lake America in its search and Google Maps services, following an executive order issued by President Donald Trump amid a trade war with Canada. The change appears on Google Search and Google Maps when users search for "Lake Ontario" or type the name into the search bar. As a result, users in the U.S. will see "Lake America," while those in Canada will still see "Lake Ontario," and users outside of the U.S. and Canada will see both names.

This update follows Google's policy of reflecting name changes in official government sources, such as the U.S. Geographic Names Information System (GNIS). Google has previously made similar name changes, such as renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America under President Trump's order last year. The sudden change may be surprising for users, especially if they have not been following the recent trade disputes between the U.S. and Canada.
