Gaza death toll from Israel’s war nears 73,500 as 9 more Palestinians killed

GAZA CITY, Aug 30 — Israel's military struck a Hamas commander inside the compound of Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir al-Balah on Saturday, though confirmation of his death remains pending. The hospital's director, Raed Hussein, reported the strike caused minor injuries and extensive material damage. Israel has maintained its targeting of Hamas militants despite a US-backed ceasefire since October 2025, claiming the commander had launched attacks on IDF troops and civilians.

Earlier that day, Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital was hit by Israeli strikes, prompting extensive damage to water tanks and debris accumulation. The military attempted to minimize civilian risk, having warned medical authorities about the cessation of using medical facilities for terrorist purposes two days prior. Doctors Without Borders (MSF) expressed outrage at the airstrike within the hospital compound, emphasizing the critical need for hospitals to remain safe for patients and healthcare workers amid frequent targeting.

Gaza's civil defense agency reported four deaths from other strikes on Saturday, including one in Israeli fire near Deir al-Balah, two in a Tel al-Hawa neighborhood strike, and one in Khan Yunis. The Israeli military is investigating these reports. Since the ceasefire, Israeli forces have inflicted at least 1,313 casualties, though the Palestinian health ministry, under Hamas, corroborates these UN-affirmed figures. Israeli forces have reported five deaths among their ranks and one civilian contractor.
