G25: Merdeka is a time to strengthen institutions, not just celebrate progress

Malaysia’s 69th Merdeka anniversary serves as a reminder of the country's progress since gaining independence, but also highlights the work that remains to build a stronger nation, according to G25 Malaysia. The group of former senior civil servants commended Malaysia's transformation due to investments in education, healthcare, infrastructure, rural development, and the overall economy, moving the nation beyond its earlier reliance on agriculture and primary commodities.

However, G25 emphasized that today's challenges are unique and more complex, citing changes in the global economy, technology, inequality, public institutions, and the strain on social cohesion in a society increasingly divided by information. While technology has facilitated better communication and connection, it has also enabled the spread of misinformation and the amplification of divisive voices, G25 noted.

The group stressed that Malaysians must be more willing to listen to one another as technology continues to shape public discourse, avoiding complacency despite their collective achievements. They urged Malaysians to put the country's long-term interests ahead of the divisions of the moment, advocating for strengthened Parliament, public institutions, responsible use of power, respect for the rule of law, and the meaningful participation of citizens in shaping the nation's future.
