ESPN grades Falcons' trade for Bears DT Gervon Dexter

On Sunday, the Atlanta Falcons completed a trade with the Chicago Bears, sending cornerback Clark Phillips III and a fifth-round draft pick to the Bears in exchange for defensive tackle Gervon Dexter. The move addressed the Falcons' defensive tackle needs, as they were thin even after acquiring former Jaguars DT Maason Smith earlier in the offseason.

ESPN's analysis suggested the Falcons obtained a significant upgrade, with general manager Ian Cunningham reportedly getting a great deal from his mentor Ryan Pace. ESPN's Ben Solak awarded the Falcons an A-minus grade for the trade, while the Bears received a C.

Dexter, 24, had a solid season with the Bears, recording 44 tackles (21 solo), six sacks, and a pressure rate of 10.5% in 2023. His performance ranked 11th among all defensive tackles, well above the league average for defensive tackles (7.4%). Dexter is expected to start at nose tackle for the Falcons in 2026.

The Bears traded Dexter due to his final year of contract, but even if the Falcons do not re-sign him, they will receive a compensatory pick. Dexter is on a contract year, which likely contributed to the Bears' willingness to accept a cheap return for him. If Dexter has a successful year in Atlanta, the Falcons might consider extending his contract. However, they could also let him walk and receive a compensatory pick that could improve upon the fifth-round draft pick they gave up.

The Falcons still have roster cuts to make before the NFL's 53-man roster deadline on Sunday evening at 6 p.m. ET. They have already trimmed 11 players but must cut 26 more before the deadline.
