Drone Sparks Russia Refinery Fire as Moscow Warns of Retaliation

A Ukrainian drone attack caused a fire at an oil refinery near Russia’s Baltic Sea coast, sparking Moscow's warning of forthcoming "massive strikes" against Ukrainian energy facilities. The UAV intrusion occurred deep within Russian territory, as Russian Governor Alexander Drozdenko stated on Telegram. One of the downed drones crashed near the Kirishi refinery, igniting the blaze, according to Ria Novosti.

The fire was swiftly extinguished, with no casualties reported. The Kirishi refinery, situated 1,000 km north of Kyiv, was set to resume operations this month following previous strikes in March and May. Owned by Russian oil producer Surgutneftegas PJSC, the 400,000-barrel-a-day facility primarily produces diesel, gasoline, and fuel oil for export.

In August alone, Ukraine has mounted over 20 attacks on Russian refineries, a monthly record since Russia's invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022. Responding to the intensified Ukrainian assaults, Russia extended a ban on diesel exports on Saturday to ensure domestic supply. The ongoing bombing campaign has precipitated gasoline shortages across various Russian regions.

The Defense Ministry disclosed preparations for "massive strikes" against Ukrainian energy targets in response to recent attacks against civilian and energy infrastructure. Last year, Russian attacks on Ukraine's energy facilities left millions enduring prolonged freezing temperatures and darkness. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reported on Telegram that 13 drones were neutralized en route to the capital, with the Defense Ministry claiming 494 Ukrainian drones were intercepted overnight.

Russia also launched two Iskander-M ballistic missiles and 130 UAVs, of which Ukrainian air defenses neutralized 125. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy disclosed ongoing recovery efforts in the village of Myla, west of Kyiv, following a Russian strike that detonated a warehouse storing explosives, resulting in 38 deaths, 20 injuries, and four missing persons.

Zelenskyy emphasized that pyrotechnic units are working tirelessly to detect and neutralize explosive devices, with the cleanup process expected to continue as long as necessary.
