‘CoE cannot be only for contracted players’: VVS Laxman on building India’s cricket pipeline

VVS Laxman, the legendary Indian batsman, took on the role of leading the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) in December 2021, after retiring from professional cricket. The CoE, which began modestly at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, has grown into a world-class facility for nurturing Indian cricket talent.

Laxman credits the vision of former BCCI secretary Jay Shah for building the CoE into a comprehensive ecosystem that includes coaching, sports science, technology, and education. He emphasizes the importance of providing access to this infrastructure not just for contracted players, but for domestic and pathway players as well, to strengthen the entire Indian cricket pipeline.

One of the most significant changes Laxman has witnessed is the integration of various aspects of cricket development - coaching, sports science, technology, and education - under one roof. He is particularly pleased that domestic and pathway players now have easier access to quality coaching, sports science, and technology, which will help identify and nurture young talent early on.

Laxman notes that many former and current players are increasingly taking an interest in coaching, recognizing the value of their experience in guiding the next generation of cricketers. The Centre of Excellence offers coaching courses that focus on developing communication, leadership, and the ability to transfer their knowledge to players, preparing them for a successful transition from player to coach.

The BCCI's investment in women's cricket is also a key focus for Laxman. He acknowledges the rapid growth of women's cricket in India and is committed to creating a tailored support system for female athletes, with a particular emphasis on developing coaches and support staff who understand the unique needs of women's cricket.

Laxman takes pride in witnessing the development of young players at the Centre of Excellence, particularly at the U-19 level. For him, it is an immensely satisfying role to see players grow not only as cricketers but also as individuals, equipped with the discipline, resilience, and mental fortitude to excel in a long and successful career.
