Carlos Sainz: Changes in drivers’ competitiveness could be down to F1 rules era

Carlos Sainz, the four-time grand prix winner, has suggested that the fluctuations in competitiveness among Formula 1 drivers may be influenced by the significant changes in car regulations. Last winter, Formula 1 underwent a major overhaul, with updates to both the chassis and engine, shifting the focus from ground-effect cars to active aero and a 50/50 balance between internal combustion and electrical power.

Sainz believes that this transition has led to a more uneven competitive landscape, as drivers have had to adapt to new car characteristics and power unit management.

Sainz noted the increased disparity between team-mates' performances, comparing it to the differences between Lewis Hamilton, Ferrari, Charles Leclerc, Ferrari, and Max Verstappen, Aston Martin. He acknowledged that adapting to the changing car dynamics can be a challenging process, taking time to find the optimal balance. Sainz himself had to adjust to the ground-effect cars during his time at Ferrari and Williams in 2022-25, ultimately finding success despite the initial learning curve.

The former champion also highlighted the impact of team changes on driver performance. In his final test of the 2018 season with McLaren, Sainz felt an immediate connection with the car, which aligned perfectly with his preferred driving style. While he appreciated his time at Toro Rosso and Renault, Sainz believes that a car can't be perfectly tailored to an individual's driving technique.
