Cantopop diva Anita Mui’s mother dies at 102 after collapsing in flat

The 102-year-old mother of late Cantopop star Anita Mui passed away on Sunday morning in Hong Kong. Tam Mei-kam, who was 31, was assisting her daughter in consuming liquid oatmeal when she suddenly fainted in their Causeway Bay apartment. Emergency services were called and responded swiftly to find Tam unconscious. She was transported to Ruttonjee Hospital in Wan Chai, where efforts to revive her were unsuccessful.

Tam had a history of heart disease and high blood pressure, necessitating regular medication and a liquid-based diet. Police investigators found no suspicious elements in her residence and handed the case to the Wan Chai district miscellaneous inquiries unit. Anita Mui, the renowned Cantopop artist, had succumbed to cervical cancer and respiratory issues in December 2003 at the age of 40.

Tam had a tumultuous legal relationship with her daughter, contesting her mother's estate arrangements in court over a decade. Despite the court upholding Anita's will, Tam's legal battles culminated in bankruptcy due to unpaid legal fees. The majority of Mui's estate, valued at over HK$100 million (US$12.8 million), will now benefit the Miu King Buddhist Association as per Anita's wishes.
