Buffalo Milk Prices In Mumbai To Rise By ₹9 Per Litre From September 1, Retail Rates Expected To Touch ₹112

Starting from September 1, the cost of buffalo milk in Mumbai will increase by ₹9 per litre, with wholesale prices rising from ₹93 to ₹102 per litre. This price hike is expected to push the retail price to approximately ₹110 per litre in North Mumbai and ₹112 in the southern parts of the city, according to the Mumbai Milk Producers Association (MMPA).

The increase is attributed to the rising costs of milch animals, cattle feed, and fodder. The last buffalo milk price increase was announced in February this year. Higher milk prices are also anticipated to make milk-based products like paneer, ghee, and traditional sweets costlier. High-quality paneer, which currently costs around ₹580 per kg, may see its price rise to ₹640 per kg.

Sweet retailer Deepak Agarwal in Ghatkopar predicts prices of popular sweets such as peda and barfi could increase by around 10%. Although the increased cost will be absorbed by wholesalers and semi-wholesalers, end users are expected to not be greatly affected. Mumbai consumes around 45 lakh litres of milk daily, with only about a quarter of it being cow milk.

The city's dependence on milk supplied from outside its limits has increased substantially over the decades, with only around 10% of the city's milk supply now coming from animals kept within municipal limits.
