Broncos’ Jonathon Cooper to start season on commissioner’s exempt list, AP source says

The Associated Press has learned that Denver Broncos linebacker Jonathon Cooper, who is currently facing a felony strangulation charge, will commence the 2026 NFL season on the commissioner's exempt list. The decision was confirmed by a source, who requested anonymity due to the matter not being officially announced by the team or the NFL prior to the roster cutdown deadline on Sunday.

Cooper, who has been a consistent presence for the Broncos, has faced two domestic violence arrests in June. The first incident occurred on June 4, when he was arrested alongside his then-girlfriend following an argument and physical confrontation over alleged infidelity. Subsequently, charges were dropped against his girlfriend, but Cooper was subsequently charged with a felony of second-degree assault by strangulation, along with the protection order against him.

A second arrest followed, where Cooper was accused of violating the protection order through 20 messages and two unanswered phone calls to his girlfriend, culminating in a visit to her apartment which prompted her to call 911. Cooper was present at the Broncos' training camp and participated in the preseason finale against the Minnesota Vikings, contributing to their 34-6 victory.

The National Football League is currently investigating Cooper's situation, with the possibility of a substantial suspension under the NFL's domestic violence policy hanging over his head. As a sixth-year player, Cooper has started 52 consecutive games for the Broncos, making him a crucial member of a defensive unit that has led the league in sacks for the past two seasons.
