Australian boxing great Tony Mundine dies aged 75

Tony Mundine, the legendary Australian boxer and respected community leader, has died at the age of 75. Born in Baryulgil, near Grafton in northern New South Wales, Mundine was a trailblazer for Indigenous Australians in sport. Throughout his career, he competed in four different weight divisions and won 80 fights, 64 of which were from knockouts. He leaves behind a significant boxing legacy and a lasting impact on his community.

His son, former world champion boxer and NRL star Anthony Mundine, expressed his grief on social media, saying he was "broken" and that he was returning home to say goodbye to his father. The Redfern All Blacks, the rugby league team with strong ties to Mundine, described him as a "proud Aboriginal man, champion boxer, community leader, and a much-loved son of Redfern and Baryulgil." Mundine's time spent mentoring young people at his gym in The Block at Redfern had a profound impact on many lives.

Fellow boxers, sporting figures, politicians, and celebrities have paid tribute to Mundine, acknowledging his contributions to the sport and his role as a mentor and community figure. Western Australian boxer Danny Green remembered Mundine as a gentleman who inspired him, while George "Ferocious" Kambosos Jr. expressed his sadness at losing an Australian boxing legend.

The Elouera Tony Mundine Gym, which Mundine started in the 1980s and had an open-door policy, remembered him as a trailblazer who never stopped giving back to his community.
