As NFL roster deadline nears, several teams make trades

As the NFL preseason draws to a close, teams scramble to finalize rosters before the June 6 deadline. Several franchises, including the Green Bay Packers, made roster adjustments on Saturday. The Packers traded offensive tackle Broderick Jones, who was a 2023 first-round pick, and placed quarterback Kyle McCord on the move. Quarterback Quinn Ewers and defensive lineman CJ Okoye also departed for different teams. McCord, tight end Hunter Long and center Sedrick Van Pran-Granger joined the list of players traded on Sunday.

The most prominent player on the roster bubble is three-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr., who is attempting a career resurgence with the New York Giants. On Friday, Packers head coach John Harbaugh praised Beckham, stating, "he's played well" and "has done enough to make an NFL roster for sure." However, Harbaugh remained tight-lipped about potential roster decisions for the Giants, noting, "we're working through that right now" and "we have a pretty good idea" but aren't ready to announce.

Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy, who was drafted first overall by the team in 2024, lost the starting job to Kyler Murray. With Carson Wentz and Max Brosmer anchoring the veteran QB corps, McCarthy became expendable. Indianapolis Colts quarterback J.J. McCarthy had a strong performance against the team on Saturday, competing for the backup role behind Daniel Jones.

Indianapolis Colts quarterback J.J. Richardson, the No. 4 overall pick in 2023, is a strong contender for the backup position. Given his contract status, a trade for Richardson appears unlikely.
