AFCD conducts control checks after dog attacks

The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) carried out spot checks across Hong Kong on Sunday following fatal dog attacks. The move aimed to enforce better dog control in public areas and prevent more tragedies due to inadequate supervision. In West Kowloon, AFCD officers held up signs urging pet owners to keep their animals on leashes and distributed informational pamphlets.

They reminded owners to restrain their dogs properly in public spaces. Dog owner Wong, who was present at the waterfront, believed most people were not afraid of dogs as long as they were well-managed. He maintained that he always kept his large breed dog on a leash and under strict control. However, he questioned the long-term impact of occasional spot checks.

He believed that solving the issue primarily relied on owners being self-disciplined. Another owner echoed his sentiments, noting that responsible pet owners were generally self-disciplined and did not intentionally cause harm. The AFCD announced on social media that it had recently seized a suspected fighting dog and was conducting further veterinary and temperament assessments.
