Accra ranks among world’s top 20 cities for nightlife in 2026

Accra, Ghana's vibrant capital, has been ranked as one of the world's top 20 cities for nightlife in 2026, securing the 18th spot in Time Out's global assessment. The esteemed honor was awarded to the city for its thriving nightlife districts, diverse array of bars and clubs, live music venues, and alternative entertainment spaces.

The ranking encompassed the opinions of over 24,000 locals, alongside evaluations from Time Out's city editors, culture experts, and nightlife specialists. The scoring considered the quality and affordability of nightlife, clubbing and cocktail-bar scenes, community, safety, excitement, diversity, and overall welcoming nature. Accra excelled particularly in affordability, community, and hospitality.

Remarkably, 62% of residents found the city's nightlife scene affordable, while 75% reported an easy way to establish a sense of community. Additionally, 65% described Accra as welcoming and friendly. The city's nightlife landscape continues to expand, with Osu remaining a prominent entertainment hub and East Legon emerging as a notable destination.

Beyond mainstream Afrobeats, Accra's nightlife scene also embraces electronic music, alté, R&B, and various other subcultures, contributing to its evolving nightlife identity. Notably, only the top-scoring city from each country was included in the ranking to ensure a diverse global representation. Johannesburg, the African city with the highest ranking, placed seventh globally, surpassing established nightlife destinations such as Amsterdam, Madrid, and Seoul.

Johannesburg's strong performance in affordability and community was reflected in the data, with 66% of locals rating the city positively for affordability and 80% expressing the ease of finding connection and community. Johannesburg, along with Accra, were the only two African cities to secure a spot in the global top 20, which was led by Bangkok, followed by Berlin and Melbourne.

This recognition places Accra among an increasingly competitive group of global nightlife destinations, highlighting the growing influence of Ghana's capital as a hub for music, culture, and entertainment.
