Abia LGA Chairmen’s tenure won’t terminate in November 2026 – Governor Otti

Abia State Governor Alex Otti clarified on Thursday that the tenure for current Chairmen and Councillors in the 17 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the state will not conclude in November 2026, but in 2028. During his media chat with Abia people, the Governor addressed the speculation surrounding the duration of the elected local government executives.

Governor Otti revealed that the previous two-year tenure has been modified by the Abia Parliament through an Act, and this change cannot be applied retroactively. He mentioned that the amendment was enacted before the November 2, 2024 chairmanship and councillorship elections. The Governor emphasized that the law was amended in the House of Assembly to extend the tenure to four years for the local government mayors and their Councillors.

Additionally, Governor Otti expressed his intention to review the Abia State anti-open grazing law and ensure its effective implementation. He also expressed concern over the increasing cases of cancer, kidney failure, brain tumours, and stroke among young Nigerians, advising the people of Abia to take preventive measures by being cautious about their consumption habits.
