'4th Mumbai' In Palghar, But Villagers Still Risk Their Lives Crossing Railway Tracks

In Palghar, the demand persists for villagers to have a safe and permanent road connecting Vadhiv village to the main road, despite the area being touted as the state’s next major urban growth centre and even dubbed the “Fourth Mumbai.” The rural community, home to over 4,000 inhabitants, has been forced to cross railway tracks daily simply to leave their homes. This hazardous journey is particularly dangerous for schoolchildren, patients and daily commuters, who must keep a close eye on approaching trains.

The lack of proper road access has led to tragic consequences; as of now, 22 people have lost their lives after being hit by trains, while an additional 20 individuals died due to delayed medical treatment. The absence of road connectivity becomes even more critical during emergencies, as residents are forced to carry patients across the railway tracks in a makeshift sling, a process that can take up to half an hour.

Elected representatives have repeatedly raised the matter, including Boisar Assembly constituency Shiv Sena MLA Vilas Tare, who had written to authorities three times and during the Assembly session. However, villagers are frustrated with the ongoing dangerous situation despite numerous assurances. Social activist Hareshwar Patil highlights that villagers, despite multiple representations, are now seeking not just assurances but a concrete deadline and a road constructed on the ground.
