41 countries, 135 movies: Kashmir set to host its first international film festival

Kashmir is preparing to host its inaugural international film festival from September 7 to 10, aiming to position the region as a significant hub for cinema, filmmaking, cultural exchange, and tourism. This event, "Rang-e-Cinema," will be organized by Jammu and Kashmir's Information and Public Relations Department, with the goal of revitalizing the state's historic connection with the film industry.

The festival will feature a distinguished jury comprising renowned figures from the global film industry, such as cinematographer Santosh Sivan, sound designer Resul Pookutty, and film director Himansu Sekhar Khatua. Over 1,100 submissions from 80 countries have been received, with 135 films from 41 countries shortlisted for the festival.

India is represented with 64 entries, while France and Iran contribute 13 and 8 films, respectively. Other participating nations include Türkiye, Germany, Russia, Sweden, Spain, Brazil, Qatar, Argentina, the United States, South Korea, Columbia, and Taiwan.

Set to be showcased at Sheri Kashmir International Convention Centre (SKICC), INOX PVR in Srinagar, Waves Cinema in Jammu, and Gulmarg health resort, the shortlisted films and programs will offer a diverse cinematic experience. Additionally, a floating screen will be installed on Dal Lake, enabling tourists to enjoy screenings while taking a Shikara ride. The government has appointed 50 civil service officers as liaison officers to support visiting dignitaries and delegates.

The festival will encompass nine categories, with a total prize money of Rs 96 lakh. The Best Film Award offers Rs 25 lakh, while awards for Best Director and Best Debut Director carry Rs 15 lakh each. Prizes for Best Actor (male and female) are set at Rs 8 lakh, and Rs 5 lakh each will be awarded for Best Cinematography, Best Sound Design, and Best Editing.

Beyond the film screenings, the festival will also celebrate Jammu and Kashmir's rich cultural heritage through its handicrafts, handloom, cuisine, music, and traditional arts.
