2 taken to hospital, 200 evacuated after fire breaks out in Choa Chu Kang flat

Two individuals were taken to the hospital and around 200 residents were evacuated following a fire at a flat in Choa Chu Kang on August 29. The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) reported the incident around 9:05pm at Block 287 Choa Chu Kang Avenue 2. The fire occurred in a bedroom on the second floor. SCDF used a water jet to control the blaze.

Prior to SCDF's arrival, two people were evacuated from the affected unit. Two individuals were admitted to Singapore General Hospital for smoke inhalation. It remains unclear if the evacuated individuals were among those taken to the hospital. As a safety measure, SCDF and the police also evacuated approximately 200 people from the same block.

The origin of the fire is currently under investigation. This month has witnessed several HDB fires, some of which led to fatalities. On August 25, about 70 people were evacuated after a fire in a bedroom at a housing unit in Balestier. On August 20, an elderly man received hospital treatment after a fire in a flat in Buangkok Crescent, with one fatality and 50 evacuations following a blaze in a Jurong East flat on August 16.

In early August 16, a fire in a unit at Block 684 Race Course Road resulted in five people, aged between 55 and 88, receiving hospital treatment; the 88-year-old man succumbed to his injuries on August 5. According to SCDF's annual statistics released in February, fire incidents rose by 3% from 1,990 in 2024 to 2,050 in 2025, with 1,051 of these fires occurring in residential buildings.

Unattended cooking and electrical fires, including issues with electrical wiring or overloaded sockets, continued to be the primary causes of home fires. Among the 304 electrical fires at residential sites in 2025, 34 involved active mobility devices, such as personal mobility devices, power-assisted bicycles, and personal mobility aids.
