Wisma Putra: 55 Malaysians still uncontactable as checks expand to Nepal–China border areas

PUTRAJAYA, August 29 — Thirty-six Malaysians residing in Tibet, China have reportedly been safe after experiencing flash floods and landslides near the China-Nepal border. Deputy Secretary-General of Foreign Ministry Datuk Syed Mohamad Hasrin Tengku Hussin disclosed that the identities and status of the 36 individuals are being verified with Chinese authorities and cross-checked against the list of Malaysians uncontactable in Nepal.

He stated that the ministry is widening its coordination efforts to encompass areas on the Chinese border, as some Malaysians may have traveled via China and India. The Malaysian Embassy in Beijing and the Malaysian High Commission in New Delhi are participating in the process due to reports of potential travel routes involving those countries.

The Foreign Ministry's Operations Room in Putrajaya will remain operational 24/7 to coordinate information, assist Malaysians in the affected regions, and provide the latest updates to their families. Confirmation from Chinese authorities will be required before drawing further conclusions. Malaysia, through the National Security Council (MKN) and the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA), is coordinating and assessing potential assistance for Nepal, subject to MKN's consideration and Nepal's acceptance of aid.

While Malaysia has offered readiness to aid Nepal, the Nepali government has indicated sufficient resources for search and rescue operations. The ministry is also evaluating the preparedness of Malaysian agencies, including the Special Malaysia Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team, and the Malaysian Armed Forces stand ready to provide assistance.

As per Sultan Ibrahim's decree, the ministry will continue to share verified information about affected Malaysians with their families. The media and public are urged to refrain from speculation and instead consult official statements from the Foreign Ministry for updates.
