We didn’t impose restrictions on Christian worship – Sokoto Hisbah

The Sokoto State Hisbah Board has refuted claims that it imposed limitations on Christian worship and practices in the region. Following social media reports alleging the Islamic enforcement agency introduced rules affecting Christian worship and gatherings, Commandant Dr Usman Jatau stated the assertions were false and misleading.

He assured the allegations did not align with the board's mandate or operations. The controversy originated from a blogger and others claiming the board interfered with Christian worship, prohibiting mixed gatherings of men and women in churches, and requiring separate seating arrangements for males and females during religious services.

Jatau clarified that the law establishing the Sokoto State Hisbah Board only applies to Muslims, and the board has no authority to regulate Christian worship or dictate other faiths' religious activities. He emphasized the board's response aimed to correct factual inaccuracies and prevent religious tensions. The board urged residents and Nigerians to disregard the allegations and avoid spreading unverified information that could foster distrust and discord among religious groups.
