UMNO gives state leaders mandate to negotiate electoral pacts

The Malaysian United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) has granted its state leaders the authority to engage in negotiations and discussions with political parties that are amenable to cooperation in the upcoming election, signaling a more collaborative approach to potential electoral alliances. This decision was one of several resolutions adopted at UMNO's Supreme Council meeting, chaired by party president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

The meeting, which took place on Friday night, was attended by UMNO deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan and other members of the Supreme Council.

Upon concluding the meeting, UMNO secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki addressed the press, emphasizing that any cooperation negotiations must be founded on sincerity and trust, rather than threats or intimidation. The Supreme Council also endorsed an invitation for leaders from the Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS) to participate in the 2026 UMNO General Assembly, set to take place from September 9 to 12.

Additionally, three events were scheduled for September 8: the 2026 Malay Education Convention, the Malaysian Islamic Scholars Conference, and Laman Wanita Kreatif.

In a separate matter, Asyraf reiterated UMNO's steadfast commitment to the rule of law, asserting that no individual should be presumed guilty until they have faced charges, a trial, and been convicted by a competent court. He emphasized that UMNO consistently refuses to defend any misconduct, malpractice, or wrongdoing committed by party members or leaders, stating that such individuals must face the courts through the proper legal process.

Any attempt to shame or humiliate someone, including the perception that an individual detained for investigation is already guilty, contravenes principles of justice, the presumption of innocence, and the spirit of the rule of law.
