UiTM must remain accessible to underprivileged Bumiputera students, says Sultan Sharafuddin

On August 29, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah emphasized the importance of maintaining accessibility to Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) for lower-income Malay and Bumiputera students, ensuring social mobility and equal opportunity. The Sultan's remarks were made during UiTM's 2026 Royal Address at Dewan Konsert Seri Budiman, attended by the Tengku Permaisuri of Selangor and Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir.

Sultan Sharafuddin highlighted that UiTM, originally established in 1965 with just 219 students and 11 lecturers, has grown into one of the largest higher learning institutions in the country, producing over 40,000 graduates annually and boasting an alumni network exceeding one million people. He proposed a monthly contribution of RM10 or RM100 annually from alumni to support the institution's growth and assist financially struggling students, with the potential to raise up to RM100 million annually.

The Sultan stressed that UiTM graduates are found in various professions, including accountants, engineers, doctors, lawyers, artists, and leaders in multiple fields, contributing to national development. He noted that the institution's success extends beyond sheer numbers to its transformative impact on the lives of individuals and the nation.
