Troops foil Boko Haram attack on Borno community, kill scores of insurgents

The Joint Task Force North East, Operation Hadin Kai, thwarted a Boko Haram assault on Kukawa town, Borno State, resulting in the deaths of multiple insurgents. Captain Mohammed Goni, Acting Media Information Officer, disclosed the incident in a statement on Saturday. The terrorists launched their attack on the 101 Special Forces Battalion's troops around 10:50 p.m. on August 28, 2026.

In response, the troops engaged the attackers with both direct and indirect fire, successfully repelling the assault and compelling the insurgents to retreat towards the Cross Kauwa axis. Following the confrontation, ground troops recovered more bodies of the insurgents. As the terrorists fled on motorcycles, the Air Component of Operation Hadin Kai was deployed to intercept their advance.

Despite inclement weather, the air force engaged the fleeing insurgents, neutralizing approximately 10 of them. Intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance assets tracked around 20 motorcycles carrying the fleeing terrorists towards the Tunbuns/Kangarwa axis, enabling a follow-up precision strike by the Air Component. This strike resulted in the deaths of an additional 15 insurgents and the destruction of 10 motorcycles.

In subsequent ground operations, troops recovered two motorcycles, eliminated one more terrorist, and seized various ammunition and equipment. Although four military personnel sustained injuries during the engagement, none were life-threatening, and the wounded were airlifted to a medical facility in stable condition. Ongoing reorganization, area exploitation, battle damage assessment, and operation evaluation are being conducted.
