Subsidy: Oyegun backs Atiku

Former Edo State Governor John Oyegun has stated that the economic hardships caused by the removal of petrol subsidies are bolstering support for the African Democratic Congress's presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, ahead of the 2027 election. In an interview with Sunday PUNCH, Oyegun emphasized how Atiku's proposal for a production-based intervention in the petroleum sector is gaining traction among Nigerians struggling with rising transportation, food, and living costs.

He pointed out that millions of Nigerians have yet to experience the benefits of the subsidy removal announced by President Bola Tinubu in May 2023 and are thus more receptive to Atiku's position. Oyegun highlighted Atiku's experience as a former vice president, asserting that he would bring stability to government due to his extensive experience.

He criticized the present government for the hasty removal of subsidies without addressing the corruption and structural weaknesses in the system, stating that the main mistake was the manner in which the subsidy was run. Oyegun predicted that an Atiku-led administration would prioritize governance and accountability, ensuring no hiding place for corrupt officials and implementing consequences for inefficiency.

He emphasized that the economic situation would make the cost of living and energy prices pivotal issues in the 2027 campaign, highlighting Atiku's potential advantage due to his experience as a former vice president.
