Street artist keeps old KL alive through Merdeka memories

Kuala Lumpur: As the Ambang Merdeka Festival 2026 nears, street artist Mahadzir Jam is keeping alive memories of historical Kuala Lumpur through his artwork. The 57-year-old has spent nearly four decades in the capital, recalling when roads were two-way and the Sultan Abdul Samad Building served as a courthouse. Mahadzir, from Selayang, continues to capture traditional Malaysia scenes using acrylic markers on small canvases, magnets, and other souvenirs.

The city has transformed, and Mahadzir notes the change in infrastructure, from Central Market's wet market beginnings to its current bustling complex. He sets up his artwork under trees near Dataran Merdeka, relying solely on tourists for his livelihood. His landscapes are largely imaginary, shaped by decades of painting and memories of a changing Malaysia.

Mahadzir has seen tourists from China, Italy, and Malaysians from across the Klang Valley. As National Day celebrations approach, he hopes the event will draw more visitors and bring attention to Kuala Lumpur's historic landmarks and small traders, emphasizing the importance of caring for the city for future generations.
