President Donald Trump claims the United States has secured vast oil reserves in Venezuela, bringing the country's proven oil reserves under American control. According to Trump, this agreement, which involved agreement with the acting president of Venezuela, Delcy Rodríguez, expands the U.S. oil reserves by more than 65 billion barrels. The private sector also participated in the deal.

Trump stated that this agreement would more than double the size of the U.S. oil reserves, which were estimated at 46 billion barrels as of the end of 2024 by the U.S. Energy Information Administration. The oil includes both crude oil and condensate produced during the extraction process. In early 2024, U.S. special forces reportedly captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, who was accused of "drug terrorism" along with his wife Cilia Flores. Critics have called this action a violation of international law.

Venezuela is now led by Vice President Delcy Rodríguez, who has been collaborating with Washington on oil matters for a long time. The U.S. government aims to leverage Venezuela's vast oil reserves for its benefit and has significantly influenced the Venezuelan oil industry and politics. With the world's largest proven oil reserves, Venezuela also faces pressure domestically as the ongoing Iran war drives up gasoline prices in the United States.
