Rifts in Bihar NDA: Jitan Ram Manjhi son pitches for SC sub-quotas, faces Chirag counter

In Bihar, the Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular) (HAM (S)) and its ally, the Janata Dal (United) (LJP (RV)), are engaged in a debate over the reservation policy, particularly regarding the sub-categorisation of Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs). Jitan Ram Manjhi, the son of the HAM (S) founder, has called for a review of the quota system, arguing that it should ensure benefits reach the most vulnerable and historically marginalised communities.

The Supreme Court recently allowed states to sub-classify SCs and STs to grant quotas to more backward castes within these groups.

However, Chirag Paswan, the LJP (RV) chief and Union Minister, opposes the sub-categorisation and the removal of the creamy layer, stating that quotas for SCs/STs were originally given based on untouchability and social discrimination rather than economic criteria. He also expressed concerns about social discrimination and the comfort of inter-caste marriages. The LJP (RV) has been vocal about its opposition to the SC/ST sub-categorisation, citing social discrimination as its primary reason.
