Remove colonial-era shackles on student freedom, says Anwar

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim called for the removal of colonial-era laws that limit student freedom during a Madani gathering at the Universiti Teknologi Mara's Penang campus in Permatang Pauh, Penang. He argued that these outdated laws obstruct the true meaning of independence and should be abolished to enable young people to fully contribute to the nation's future.

Anwar emphasized the importance of allowing university students more freedom to express their views and participate in various activities. He argued that older generations are not always correct, and young people should not be prevented from voicing their opinions or engaging in activities simply because they might make mistakes. He maintained that freedom does not equate to a lack of limits, but rather a country governed by the rule of law.

In his speech, the Prime Minister stressed the need to trust young people with their ideas and views. He asserted that mistakes should be addressed through appropriate channels when necessary, fostering a younger generation capable of confidently expressing themselves, acting responsibly, and contributing to Malaysia's development as an independent nation.

Anwar's call to abolish colonial-era laws extends beyond physical colonization. He views independence as granting people the space to determine the country's future. He urged young people to learn from the history of the independence struggle and build upon it by helping Malaysia achieve greater progress and gain greater international respect.
