Ready for the Coke Zero Sugar 400? Let NASCAR's Mayor give the pep talk

NASCAR's Jeff Burton, often referred to as the Mayor of the sport, gathered the crowd for a pep talk ahead of the Coke Zero Sugar 400 at Daytona International Speedway. Though the focus typically remains on the Daytona 500, Burton emphasized that this race holds unique challenges. "In some ways, this race is more challenging because it’s hotter and slicker and handling comes into play a little bit," he noted.

"It seems to be a different kind of race than the 500 because it’s shorter. The mileage makes a difference in how you approach the race."

The 59-year-old driver acknowledged that the intensity picks up early in the race, making it a crucial event for drivers aiming to solidify their championship positions. Burton stressed that every driver entering the Daytona 500 hopes to win, but beyond that, they all have agendas. This year's race features a new superspeedway package and a modified playoff format, with five drivers vying for the final three spots.

Burton urged the crowd to keep in mind that the Chase format has changed, introducing stage points that could significantly impact a driver's position. "Remember, we've had the Chase format before," he said, "but now we have stage points, so if you move that into this year with the Chase, if you pick up one point position and you gain those points going into the Chase, that could be the difference between winning a championship or not."

Burton concluded that this heightened intensity typically leads to exciting races, underscoring the importance of every driver's focus leading up to the Coke Zero Sugar 400.
