Race leader Tadej Pogacar pulls out of Spanish Vuelta after crashing during Stage 8

Slovenian cyclist Tadej Pogacar, the current race leader in the red jersey, has been forced to withdraw from the Spanish Vuelta after crashing during stage eight of the competition. The incident occurred approximately 33 kilometers from the finish line. Pogacar, who is riding for UAE Team Emirates, tried to continue racing but was unable to do so and had to be taken to an ambulance.

The crash saw Pogacar lose control of his bicycle, swerve into other riders, and collide with the ground, hitting his head and shoulder. He suffered injuries to his left arm and shoulder, as evidenced by footage. The crash occurred during a relatively flat 171-kilometer stage from Puçol to Xeraco, which typically offers opportunities for sprinters to make an impact.

Pogacar was leading the race by a significant margin of 3 minutes and 50 seconds over his rival Enric Mas of Movistar before the crash. The race's leader, Bryan Coquard from Cofidis, claimed victory in the stage ahead of Mads Pedersen and Jordi Meeus. In the overall standings, Felix Gall came in second with a gap of 1:11 behind Pogacar, followed by Primoz Roglic in third place.

Jonas Vingegaard, currently Pogacar's main competition, will not be participating in the Vuelta due to his own crash during the recent Tour de France. The Spanish Vuelta is set to conclude in Granada on September 13th.
