Proposed medical college in Uttara Kannada, road in Bengaluru will be named after Hegde, says Karnataka Chief Minister

Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar announced on Saturday that a proposed medical college in Uttara Kannada, the former residence of the late Chief Minister Ramakrishna Hegde, and a major road in Bengaluru will be named after the veteran leader. Speaking at the centenary celebrations of Hegde, Shivakumar praised his contributions to decentralization, education, and institution-building, emphasizing how Hegde's legacy continues to influence Karnataka's political and administrative landscape.

Shivakumar highlighted Hegde's role in nurturing a new generation of political leaders and his experiments with decentralized governance long before such changes were formalized. The Chief Minister also spoke about Hegde's support for expanding professional education in Karnataka, particularly in medical and engineering fields. Shivakumar proposed establishing the 'Ramakrishna Hegde Best Panchayat Award' to honor panchayats that excel, with an annual award to be given on Hegde's birthday.

Vice-President C.P. Radhakrishnan, Former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, and former Vice-President M. Venkaiah Naidu paid tribute to Hegde, highlighting his commitment to decentralization, accountability, and democratic institutions. The documentary and book on Hegde, released by his family, were also unveiled at the event.
