Poor air connectivity could hamper Sibu’s tourism ambitions, says deputy minister

Sibu's tourism potential may be hindered by insufficient direct flights and connectivity, warned Sarawak Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government Datuk Michael Tiang. He emphasized the importance of reliable air links in drawing more visitors and boosting the local tourism sector, especially as promotional efforts target both domestic and international travelers.

As the Pelawan assemblyman, Tiang remains committed to advocating for enhanced AirBorneo connectivity to Sibu, expressing confidence in the state-owned airline's future service expansion as more aircraft are integrated into its fleet. "First and foremost, I am fighting for AirBorneo flight connectivity. That is about bringing people to Sibu," he told reporters at the Sibu Fong Hwang San Ur Par Wang Kong Temple during the Hungry Ghost Festival.

Tiang revealed that the State Transport Ministry is securing more aircraft for AirBorneo, enabling the airline to conduct more domestic flights and eventually establish links with major overseas destinations. This expansion is part of the Sarawak government's strategy to bolster the airline's capacity to connect the state with other locations, particularly in Southeast Asia.

While improved connectivity is crucial, Tiang stressed that it is not sufficient on its own to make Sibu an attractive tourism destination. He urged for greater emphasis on cleanliness, hygiene, public amenities, including the condition of public toilets and those managed by private enterprises. Additionally, he highlighted the need for infrastructure such as an international convention center and a new volleyball stadium, alongside traffic infrastructure improvements to alleviate congestion.

Tiang also stressed that food operators should ensure their premises remain clean, appealing, and comfortable beyond relying on Sibu's reputation for good food to attract visitors.
