OpenAI announces end to Cursor model access following SpaceX acquisition

Artificial intelligence developer OpenAI will cease supplying models to coding platform Cursor upon its acquisition by SpaceX, with direct access set to end on November 12, 2026. The company has formally informed SpaceX of its intent to terminate the agreement.

The contract allows OpenAI to withdraw from the partnership within a limited timeframe following a change in Cursor's corporate control. OpenAI provided the maximum notice permitted under the terms to grant developers ample time to transition to alternative access methods.

OpenAI cited concerns over SpaceX's potential use of its technology in accordance with its service terms as the primary reason for the decision. The company has previously encountered contractual issues with Musk-controlled entities, including Twitter (now X) and xAI.

OpenAI stressed the importance of compliance and maintaining safety at scale when engaging with large corporate integrations. While acknowledging Cursor's contributions, the company emphasized the need for stricter accountability as AI capabilities continue to expand. As a result, future models, including OpenAI's Astra model, will not be supplied to Cursor under the existing agreement.

OpenAI expressed respect for Cursor and its developer community, having worked with the platform for nearly four years. The company pledged additional support to developers affected by the transition ahead of the proposed November shutoff.
