Onion Price Pinch Leaves Consumers In Tears; Rates May Hit ₹80/Kg In Bhopal

Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh is experiencing the impact of soaring onion prices, which have climbed to Rs 50-60 per kg. Retail onion prices, which earlier stood at a modest Rs 20 per kg, have now surged due to reduced supply. Traders warned that the price of onion may even touch Rs 80 per kg in the coming days. The cause of this price hike is low arrivals in the market, attributed to poor storage and adverse climatic conditions affecting the cultivation area and average production.

Onion traders in Ashta reported a significant decline in cultivation area and a 40% reduction in average production, resulting in a 40% decrease to 50%. Farmers, who stored onion, resorted to panic selling during the onset of monsoon, leading to a shortage of onion in markets.
