'Once in a lifetime': Schoolteacher wins AFL Fantasy competition

Every year, nearly 140,000 Australian fans participate in the AFL Fantasy competition, where they manage virtual teams to score points based on real-life player performances. This year's winner, Tyler Wagner, a former Fremantle Dockers fan, was ecstatic when his team, Wagmantle, secured the victory in the 13th year of his involvement in the game.

With seconds left on the clock, Wagner's team was leading by three fantasy points against The Powerhouse. When he saw The Powerhouse player Jarman Impey miss the mark, Wagner's hopes were realized. The prize for the winner included $20,000, two tickets to the AFL Grand Final, and a car. Wagner, a 28-year-old PE teacher, described his win as overwhelming and shared the excitement of his young students, who followed the fantasy competition closely.

Fremantle Dockers have never won a premiership in their 32-year history, and Wagner hopes his success will inspire his father, a lifelong Dockers supporter, to attend the Grand Final. AFL Fantasy expert Ryan Heff Gerlach attributed Wagner's win to a combination of skill and luck, noting that the statistical aspect and gaming appeal make the competition particularly enticing.
