Number of missing in Nepal, China floods soars to nearly 3,000

Nearly 3,000 people are missing in the floods that struck the Nepal-Tibet border on August 29, 2026, according to the latest figures from Nepal and China. Rescue teams in both countries are still searching for the missing, with 633 bodies recovered and fears of further fatalities. Over 93,000 people may have been affected by the disaster, with food and water supplies dwindling in the disaster zones.

The trauma of the catastrophe has been immense, and many survivors have lost everything, facing an agonizing wait to learn the fate of their loved ones. In Nepal, 933 hydropower workers were added to the missing persons list, among trekkers and pilgrims to Mount Kailash. In Tibet, seven people died and 554 remain missing, while Chinese authorities evacuated 499 Chinese residents from the region.

The search for survivors is hampered by fears of further flooding, as one of the dams has burst, creating a new threat to emergency workers.
