Norway's King Haakon VIII pays tribute to late father in first speech

Norway's newly crowned King Haakon VIII paid tribute to his late father, King Harald V, in his first public speech on Saturday. Haakon described his father as a person who remained committed to his values and duties, and expressed deep mourning for his loss. The 53-year-old king noted that it was moving to see the outpouring of support from Norwegians, including candles, messages, and flowers in Palace Square.

Haakon also mentioned that his father and mother, Queen Sonja, would have celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary on Saturday. Flags were flown at half-mast, and scores of Norwegians continued to pay their respects at the palace, adding flowers to the existing displays. The late king was remembered for his popularity despite scandals that plagued his family during his 35-year reign.

Haakon thanked his father for being a wonderful father and acknowledged a vast task ahead. He emphasized that each individual must find their own path forward and be true to themselves. Tributes from European monarchies and world leaders, including US President Donald Trump, poured in. King Haakon held audiences with church leaders, parliament, and the Supreme Court, and received Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store.

Memorial services are scheduled for Sunday, and King Haakon will swear an oath of allegiance in parliament on Tuesday.
