Norway, in mourning, enters a new era under Haakon VIII

Norway's monarchy has entered a new era with the passing of King Harald on Friday at the age of 89. His son, Haakon VIII, ascended to the throne at 53, succeeding a monarch who was known for his modernity and modesty. A national period of mourning was declared, during which thousands of Norwegians gathered in the capital, Oslo, to pay their respects to the late king.

Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store praised Harald for his unwavering faith in the people and his warmth, while tributes poured in from around the world, including from US President Donald Trump. The new king, Haakon, is expected to formally inform the government of his father's death and will be granted a state funeral date in the future.
