New road to ease access to schools, healthcare, markets for 446 Kanowit residents

Kanowit, a village in Sarawak, will see improved access to essential services thanks to a newly paved road. This 3.6-kilometre road connects three longhouses in the Menalun-Sungai Poi area, providing easier access to schools, healthcare facilities, markets, employment opportunities, and agricultural activities for 446 residents. The RM46.11-million Phase Three project extends the existing Phase Two road to Rumah Keleman, Rumah Nyaru, and Rumah Jelani, benefiting 57 doors.

Minister of National Unity Datuk Seri Aaron Ago Dagang officiated the groundbreaking ceremony, highlighting how improved road connectivity will enhance rural residents' mobility and open up more economic opportunities. He emphasized that this project, part of the federal government's efforts to improve rural connectivity nationwide, will bring communities closer to vital services and strengthen the connection between people.

The road will reduce reliance on river transport, facilitating easier transportation of produce for farmers and better access to employment opportunities in Kanowit and Sibu.

The project, constructed by the Sarawak Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) under JKR-R1 specifications, is expected to be completed within 24 months, from November 17, 2025, to November 15, 2027. DID Sarawak, along with the appointed contractor Kemudi Harta Sdn Bhd, will closely monitor the construction to ensure adherence to quality standards and timely completion.
