New NBA president, Badejo-Okusanya, outlines agenda for govt, judiciary, others

Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, the 33rd president of the NBA, has outlined her administration's key objectives following her inauguration in Port Harcourt. The NBA aims to "speak truth to power," defend judicial independence, demand accountability from government institutions, and focus on the welfare, economic security, and professional development of lawyers.

Badejo-Okusanya emphasized that the NBA will challenge those in power but remain independent, disciplined, and courageous in the face of threats to fundamental rights, judicial independence, and the rule of law. She made it clear that the NBA will not become an appendage of any government or individual, stating that they will engage constructively while refusing to be "captured" by any government, party, region, religion, or interest group.

Her administration will support the judiciary while demanding integrity, efficiency, and accountability within the justice system. Badejo-Okusanya promised a technology-driven overhaul of NBA services, including a membership portal for easier access to benefits and electronic law reports at subsidized prices. The NBA will also explore lawful mechanisms to encourage fair wages for vulnerable lawyers and support healthcare initiatives for the Bar, partnering with the African Medical Centre of Excellence for comprehensive wellness screenings.
