Nepal looting: 29 held for stealing Rs 93 lakh from bank safe swept away by floods

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority confirmed on Saturday that five out of the 16 individuals from Assam who were reported missing in the recent Nepal flash flood disaster have been found safe. Among the remaining 11 people still unaccounted for are a retired Gauhati University professor, her husband, and a doctor from Nalbari Medical College and Hospital in western Assam.

The ASDMA spokesperson stated that Pankaj Barman and Samar Bezbaruah from Arora village in Nalbari district, as well as Shiva Marak, Sarbison Marak, and Elipson Sangma from Satgaon area in West Karbi Anglong, have been confirmed safe. However, Arun Mahanta and Birson Sangma from the same Arora village area have not been located.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had previously informed that 12 Assam residents remained missing after the disaster struck Rasuwagadhi in northern Nepal on August 26, 2026. An updated list was released on Saturday, revealing that three individuals from Daidak village in Karbi Anglong district, Rahul Daimary from Golaghat district, Shatadal Nath from Hojai district, and Tirtha Chaliha, a doctor from Nalbari district, are still missing.

The remaining three individuals, Pankaj Naug from Rukminigaon locality, Dipali Sarkar, and her husband Manash Kumar Ghosh, are from Guwahati. Ms. Sarkar, who worked as the head of Gauhati University's Physics Department, was part of a 32-member group traveling to Kailash-Manasarovar in Tibet when the disaster occurred.
