Morning Briefing Plus: Eine Uno für die KI?

Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft, has penned a commentary on the potential risks associated with Artificial Intelligence (AI). While highlighting numerous benefits that Gates acknowledges, he also warns about the potential of AI to eliminate jobs, be misused by criminals, and negatively impact children's development. This sentiment is echoed by Geoffrey Hinton, a renowned computer scientist, cognitive psychologist, and expert in neural networks, often referred to as the "Godfather of AI". Hinton shares a strikingly similar warning to that of Gates.

This concurrence of viewpoints from two of the most influential figures in the field of AI has raised concerns. The proposed solution proposed by Gates is the establishment of regulatory bodies, both at national and international levels, to guide the integration of AI into society and enforce globally accepted standards. The question remains: is this the answer to our AI-related concerns? Some might argue for the creation of a KI-Sicherheitsrat (AI security council).

This thought brings me back to a research project I undertook years ago. I had the opportunity to work alongside German diplomats in the United Nations headquarters in New York. The task was to draft a resolution aimed at protecting children in war zones. The proposal seemed straightforward: nobody would oppose the protection of the vulnerable, right?
