Missouri college football player dies after medical emergency during season opener

William Jewell College football player MicahJo Barnett lost his life on Saturday after a medical emergency during his team's opening game, according to school representatives. The junior business administration major suffered the incident at Greene Stadium in Liberty, Missouri, while playing against Fort Lewis College. The college released a statement expressing their condolences to Barnett's family, fellow students, the Cardinal Football community, and beyond.

Fort Lewis College also released a statement, describing the event as a "medical emergency" at the William Jewell sideline, though specifics about the cause of death were not disclosed. Both institutions have requested their respective communities to offer support. Barnett hailed from Liberty, where William Jewell's campus is situated.

As a senior in high school, he led his Liberty North High School team to a state championship title. During his time at William Jewell College, Barnett started five games in the 2025 season before suffering a season-ending injury. The college intends to host a vigil at 8 p.m. on Saturday to honor Barnett's memory.
