Mirwaiz backs NC MP, demand for J&K statehood, Article 370

Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, head of the Hurriyat Conference, praised National Conference MP Aga Ruhullah Mehdi on Saturday. Mirwaiz criticized the ruling party for not fulfilling election promises, urging all political parties in Jammu and Kashmir to support the restoration of Article 370 and statehood. He stated that all promises made to the people of J&K since 1947 have been broken, including constitutional guarantees.

Mehdi, also a Shia cleric and influential figure, announced his intention to resign from both the NC and the Lok Sabha, citing the NC's failure to uphold Article 370. Mehdi expressed concern over the uncertain future for nearly 65% of J&K's young population, facing unemployment, lack of opportunities, and various pressures on their religious rights, traditions, and language.
